Shepperton Studios eyes expansion

Shepperton Studios As UK studio space continues to be in high demand, there are plans in the pipeline for the expansion of Shepperton Studios.

Following an interview with Variety in which Pinewood Group chairman and interim CEO Paul Golding told the outlet that the company had purchased 100 acres of land adjacent to Shepperton, a spokesperson confirmed to The Knowledge that a planning application would be submitted later this year.

Studio space in the UK is at a premium with major inward investment projects as well as domestic slates booking up space well in advance.

There are several plans underway around the UK for both new studio spaces and expansions of existing facilities that should ease the pressure. However, with inward investment at a record high in the UK it looks likely that the demand will continue for some time.

Dagenham is set to get a purpose-built complex in a project backed by Film London, mayor of London Sadiq Khan and London Local Enterprise Panel.

In the east of England, a studio space is planned for Suffolk as Bentwaters Park revealed last year it planned to develop a former US Air Force base as a dedicated film studio.

Wardpark Studios in Scotland is set to grow following the acquisition of two additional industrial blocks next to the site of a new sound stage.

Among the existing major studio players, Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden and Pinewood itself are undergoing expansion projects with Elstree working on increasing in size too. .
