UK IN FOCUS 2016
Flanked by the wild North Atlantic Ocean and a landscape of dramatic cliffs, the Giant’s
Causeway was designated Northern Ireland’s only World Heritage Site by Unesco in 1986.
Formed around 60 million years ago by a volcanic eruption that left the now famous interlocking
columns (or, according to legend, by Irish giant Finn MacCool, who needed a way across the North
Channel to fight Scottish giant Benandonner), the Causeway is a designated Area of Outstanding
Natural Beauty with a wealth of flora and fauna. Having been subject to several million years of
erosion, some of the structures have been named after objects they have come to resemble,
including the Organ, the Giant’s Boot and the Camel’s Hump. Productions to have used the
location include
Your Highness
and
Dracula Untold
.
