Council gives green light for Sunderland studio

Sunderland City Council officially passed planning permission yesterday (25 March) for the development of a major new studio in Sunderland.
The £450m Crown Works Studios recently secured major investment from the government as part of a plan for the north-east to become a production powerhouse.
The funding was announced during the recent budget under the Chancellor’s north-east devolution package.
Crown Works Studios will become one of Europe’s largest studio complexes and is backed by production company Fulwell 73 and Cain International – as Fulwell Cain and Sunderland City Council. In a tweet from the council account, the project was described as a “once in a generation” development.
The new complex is expected to transform the regional economy, generating £336m Gross Value Added (GVA) a year locally.
Under the devolution deal with the North East Mayoral Combined Authority (NEMCA), local leaders will be empowered with funding and tools to deliver local regeneration priorities, building on plans to level up across the north-east.
NEMCA intends to use £25m of this funding to remediate the prospective Crown Works Studios site, laying the ground for development of the studio facilities. It is hoped the development will create around 8,000 jobs in the region.
