Burton and Taylor drama for BBC Four

The lives of two of Hollywood’s most iconic figures, Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor, are to be portrayed in a new feature length drama for BBC Four.

Burton and Taylor will explore their stormy private life as well as the couple’s glamorous public persona, with particular focus on their disastrous decision to star together in a Broadway production of Private Lives in 1983. The play had more drama going on behind the scenes than on the stage, and saw the pair’s relationship finally crumble.

The drama stars Dominic West and Helena Bonham Carter as the volatile stars, and was shot entirely on location in New York earlier this year. The producer is Lachlan McKinnon and the drama is directed by Richard Laxton from a script by William Ivory.

It is a BBC America co-production for Dramaville, a strand which includes Broadchurch, Luther, Spies of Warsaw and The Hour.
