Small and emerging independent production companies with turnovers of less than £10m per annum are set to get a boost from a new BBC package of support.

A fund of £1m will be ring-fenced to nourish the indies with an emphasis on diverse and out-of-London producers.

Charlotte Moore, director of content, said: “We’ve listened to the sector and understand the pressures small indies face in this fast changing global landscape.

“Small indies are a vital part of the UK’s creative industry and crucially deliver content that speaks to British audiences. We recognise how valuable they are to the ecology and this additional support will enable them to compete more effectively.”

The indies identified by the scheme to receive support will be fast-tracked with a commissioning mentor, development deal and targeted commissioning opportunities.

There will be bespoke deal arrangements that could include tailored cash flow terms; shared risk arrangements agreed upfront; assistance in securing third party investment and tailored events to build stronger connections.

The BBC said that producers should get in touch with their network commissioning and business contacts to discuss support.
