Bill Nighy, Helena Bonham Carter wrap California Avenue shoot

Filming took place in Hertfordshire locations including Watford and Hemel Hempstead
A 13-week shoot is wrapping on Hugo Blick’s California Avenue, starring Bill Nighy, Helena Bonham Carter, Erin Doherty and Tom Burke.
Shooting was based largely in Hertfordshire with locations including Watford and Hemel Hempstead.
The 6 x 60’ drama is produced by Drama Republic for the BBC. Colin Wratten produces; the exec producers are Blick for Eight Rooks, Greg Brenman for Drama Republic, Bonham Carter and Lucy Richer for the BBC. Mediawan Rights and Entourage Media will distribute the series internationally.
Set in a remote, canal-side caravan park in the 1970s, the story centres on Doherty as Leia, a woman on the run and seeking sanctuary with her 11 year-old-child.
Nighy and Bonham Carter star as Leia’s parents, Eddie and Jerry, with Tom Burke as showman Cooper.
At the time of the official greenlight news, Blick commented: “Over the past few decades, whether through comedy, political dramas or even a western, I’ve looked to explore what television fiction can be. California Avenue is an exploration of the people who inspired me to want to do this.”
Hertfordshire’s film-friendly profile is boosted by several studios and filming facilities, including Sky Studios Elstree, Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden, OMA V, Elstree Studios, Bovingdon Airfield Studios and Bricket Wood Location Hub. The final series of Apple TV’s Silo is currently in production at three studios, including Hoddesdon Studios, and recent pictures on the BBC regional news site show the cast of the behemoth new Harry Potter TV series filming on the streets of Hoddesdon.
