The Elephant Man readies to film in Wales
A new BBC One drama about the life of Joseph Merrick, known as the Elephant Man, is in pre-production and readying to film in Wales later this year.
Merrick was born with severe deformities and, having been exhibited at a human oddities show, went on to live in the London Hospital where he died in 1890 aged 27.
Charlie Heaton – best known for his co-starring role in Netflix hit Stranger Things - stars as Merrick. Heaton said of the part: “This is such a special role and a challenge for any actor. Joseph has such an incredible story and I can’t wait to go on this journey and bring him to life.”
The series is written by Neil McKay, whose credits include The Moorside, and will be delivered as two feature-length episodes. New Pictures is producing the drama for BBC One with Richard Laxton in the director’s chair. Tom Mullens produces.
