Sets were built at the studios with multiple city locations also providing backdrops

Harlan Coben’s Lazarus filmed for 33 weeks at Space Studios Manchester, as well as in multiple locations across the city.

Sets for the laboratory, library and main office seen in the drama were built at the studio, with the team also using the production offices and workshops.

Screen Manchester supported production on the thriller-with-a-horror-twist, with filming permits secured for locations including The Langley Building in the Northern Quarter’s Hilton Street, George Leigh Street in Ancoats, the exterior of BIMM on Faulkner Street, Chinatown, the Southern Cemetery, the exterior of the Gotham Hotel, Mayfield Park, the Rochdale Canal and music venue The Peer Hat.

Based on an original story idea and written by Coben and Danny Brocklehurst, the six-part series is produced by Amazon MGM Studios, Manchester-based Quay Street Productions and Final Twist Productions. It filmed from December 2023 to June 2024, and is produced by Matt Strevens.

The executive producers are Coben, Brocklehurst, Nicola Shindler, Richard Fee and Claflin. Wayne Che Yip directs episodes one and two and is also executive producer. The series stars Sam Claflin, Bill Nighy and Alexandra Roach.

Studio co-ordinator at Space Studios Manchester, Nikki Leigh Rogers, enthused: “It’s great to see these bigger builds coming into the studio and using not only our stages for large, double-storey sets, but also using our production offices and workshops.

“The sets for Lazarus have been some of my favourites. The attention to detail and skill used to create the haunting effects of the show, is testament to the crew in the north west.”

Purpose-built and opened 11 years ago, Space Studios Manchester has more than 80,000 sq ft of production space across six sound stages. Recent productions to have filmed there include House of Guinness for Netflix, AMC’s Talamasca and Paramount’s A Gentleman in Moscow.
