The fantasy series is the third instalment of AMC’s Immortal Universe, based on Anne Rice’s books

AMC’s adaptation of Anne Rice’s Talamasca filmed at Space Studios Manchester and on location in the city.

A 27-week shoot began on Talamasca: The Secret Order in the autumn of 2024, with filming taking place on Stages 2, 3, 4 and 5; the backlot was used for a custom set-build.

The sets created include Cupids Arrow Strip Club, Catacombs, interior and exterior apartment. Production offices, workshops, props stores and unit bases were used across Space Studios.

Screen Manchester supported the shoot, in part with a cohort of trainees on paid placements in props, locations, lighting, costume and art departments; a programme that was backed by Screen Alliance North and the BFI with funding from The National Lottery.

Studio manager at Space, Dean Sinacola, said: “The original plan was for a simple build on our stages but over time that morphed into several large-scale sets, from hospital to high-end apartments and an exterior build unlike we’ve ever seen on site before. We were able to flex with the show making sure AMC had the best experience possible.”

The series also filmed in various locations around Manchester, including Philips Park Cemetery, Piccadilly station, the Northern Quarter, Peter Street, the John Rylands Library on Deansgate, the House of Books and Friends, Victoria Baths, Castlefield, Spinningfields, Harter Street and Bloom Street, Chetham’s Library, The Flight Club on King Street, Spectator Mill in Ancoats, Temperance Street and Mayfield Park.

The size and scale of the production fitted the offering in Manchester generally, as supervising location manager enthused that the city had delivered “a range of brilliant and immediately workable solutions and central to these was the invaluable facilitation provided by Screen Manchester.”

The 6 x 60’ AMC Studios original drama centres on a secretive society called the Talamasca, that tracks vampire, witches and other supernatural beings across the globe. It is the third instalment of AMC’s Immortal Universe, a canon of work based on books by the late Anne Rice, that include Interview with the Vampire and Mayfair Witches.

Talamasca: The Secret Order stars Elizabeth McGovern, Nicholas Denton, Jason Schwartzman and Celine Buckens. Eric Bogosian and Justin Kirk reprise their roles from Anne Rice’s Interview with the Vampire, appearing as crossover characters in the new series.

The series is executive produced by John Lee Hancock and Mark Lafferty, who also serve as co-showrunners, Mark Johnson, who oversees Anne Rice’s Immortal Universe, and Tom Williams along with Christopher Rice and the late author Rice. Hancock also directs.
