Industry and Back to Black actor Marisa Abela is joining the new iteration of Highlander, starring Henry Cavill and Russell Crowe and due to film later this year in the UK.

Cavill plays immortal warrior Connor MacLeod with Crowe as his mentor Ramirez; roles played by Christopher Lambert and Sean Connery respectively in the 1986 original.

Chad Stahelski is in the director’s chair for the new film, that is for theatrical release. The producers are Stuber and Nick Nesbitt for US, Stahelski for his banner 87Eleven, Neal H Moritz, Louise Rosner and Josh Davis.

The film comes from Amazon MGM’s United Artists (UA); former Netflix film head Scott Stuber relaunched the UA label last year in a deal with the US production and distribution giant. It is widely reported that UA has secured the full rights to the 1986 original Highlander film, with the potential to develop a new series.

UA’s Scott Stuber and Nick Nesbitt will produce alongside Neal H. Moritz, 87Eleven Entertainment, Stahelski’s production banner, Josh Davis of Davis Panzer Productions, and Louise Rosner. UA has secured full rights to the 1986 original, with the potential to also develop a new series. Lionsgate developed the film.
