BBC One confirms new Scottish drama
BBC One has confirmed that a new thriller, Vigil (w/t) is in the pipeline, starring Suranne Jones.
The 6 x 60 drama, which has been listed on Production Intelligence since early December with details of the producer and line producer, comes from World Productions and writer/creator Tom Edge.
It centres on the mysterious disappearance of a Scottish trawler and a death on board a Trident nuclear submarine.
Jones plays DCI Amy Silva, leading the investigation into a conspiracy that threatens the heart of Britain’s nuclear deterrent. The cast includes Rose Leslie, Shaun Evans, Anjli Mohindra, Martin Compston, Paterson Joseph, Connor Swindells, Adam James and Gary Lewis.
Ed Macdonald and Chandni Lakhani have also written some episodes; the series will be directed by James Strong and Isabelle Sieb.
More HoDs are detailed on Production Intelligence. along with confirmation of several other World Productions projects at various stages of development/pre-production.
Writer Edge said: “I'm completely thrilled to be making this series with the talented people at World Productions and BBC Drama. The ‘Continuous At Sea Deterrent’, better known as ‘Trident’, has been a contentious part of national life for half a century now, a stock of nuclear missiles kept hundreds of feet below the sea surface.
“But this world has rarely been explored on screen. I can’t wait to take a BBC One audience down with us, into the pitch-black icy waters of the unseen Atlantic, where tomorrow’s geopolitical struggles are already being played out.”
Simon Heath and Gaynor Holmes exec produce for World Productions and the BBC respectively. Filming begins next month in Scotland with support from the National Lottery through Screen Scotland.
