High-end TV spend breaks UK records

The latest statistics released by the British Film Institute show that inward investment features spent a total of £752m in the UK in the six months from January to June this year.

Combined with £178m from domestic features and around £6.5 from co-productions, the total production spend over the six months was £936m.

Of the 71 films that started principal photography in the UK since January, just 18 were inward investment projects, demonstrating the scale of budgets they have to rack up such a high percentage – 80% – of the total spend. This category includes titles such as Wonder Woman 1984 and Maleficent 2.

The rest of the 71 films that began shooting in the same period was made up of 47 domestic UK features and six co-productions.

High-end television broke previous production spend records in the first half of this year with 48 programmes beginning principal photography and spending £486m. Of these, 25 were inward investment projects – spending £316m in the UK and 23 were domestic, contributing £171m.
