Facebook tops one billion users

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg has confirmed that the social network phenomenon he launched in 2004 is now used by 1 billion people every month. This means the site has doubled its audience in just over two years. Speaking via his Facebook page, Zuckerberg revealed that the site has recorded 1.13 trillion likes, 140.3 billion friend connections and 219 billion shared photos since launch.

He added: "Helping a billion people connect is amazing, humbling and by far the thing I am most proud of in my life. I am committed to working every day to make Facebook better for you, and hopefully together one day we will be able to connect the rest of the world too."

The only blot on Facebook’s progress comes on the financial front, where its share price has dropped significantly since the company was launched on the US stock market. From $38 a share in May, it has now fallen to $21. In large part this is because the company has not yet worked out how to generate ad revenue via mobile, an increasingly popular way for people to access their accounts.
