RDF Television production The Secret Life of Four Year Olds has been commissioned into a full 7×60 series by Channel 4. The one-time observational documentary of the same name was given further scheduling slots after positive reviews from viewers when it aired back in February.

Throughout the programme select children work their way through challenges designed to replicate situations they would encounter in their own nurseries and lives. The original film helped to decipher which ways their adult personalities are already being formed. In the series the audience gets to witness it over an extended period of time.

Executive producer Teresa Watkins said: “We only scratched the surface with The Secret Life of Four Year Olds. Discovering a world that was compelling and hilarious, we want to see how these children change as they hit important developmental milestones like going to school for the first time, and moving from Reception into Year One.”

The experiment will be overseen by the children’s parents and two leading scientists, educational neuroscientist Dr Paul Howard-Jones (Bristol University) and developmental psychologist Dr Sam Wass (MCR Cognition & Brain Unit, Cambridge).

The new series of the show is set to add a little twist in that it will also involve five and six-year-olds.
