Filming in Yorkshire and the North West - page 10-11

The North West has long enjoyed
its status as a busy production hub,
offering a dazzling range of locations
and a talented crew base.
In recent years however, whether
it’s a knock-on from the success of
MediaCityUK or a general upward
swing in production in the nations and
regions, the area has played host to
a burgeoning slate of TV dramas and
comedies as well as feature films.
As there have been so many
productions flocking to the area, we
decided to take a peek at the ongoing
and forthcoming production activity, as
well as a few of the recently-completed
titles.
So we start with TV – both shiny new
shows and returning favourites.
New drama and comedy
Liverpool is set to get its very own
noir thriller as Kevin Sampson’s crime
novels are brought to the small screen
by Red Union Pictures and Pinewood
Pictures, with LA-based IM Global on
board to co-produce. Called The Killing
Pool, filming on the 8 x 60 drama is due
to commence next spring.
Red Production Company - known
as Red - is a shingle very much
associated with the north – with their
office based at MediaCityUK, the
majority of their shows are filmed in the
region. Their latest drama is Ordinary
Lies. From Exile and Accused scribe
Danny Brocklehurst, the show is set in
the world of the car showroom and is
slated to shoot in Manchester and its
environs.
Shane Meadows and Jack Thorne, who
co-wrote the acclaimed This is England
’88, are the pens behind the follow-up,
This is England ’90, which Meadows
will once again direct. Shooting is
underway – mainly around the Sheffield
area – on the Channel 4 drama, which
revisits the lives of Shaun, Kelly, Trev,
Combo, Gadget, Milky and Woody,
played out against the backdrop of rave
culture and the World Cup.
ITV Studios are gearing up for a mid-
October shoot in Manchester on The
Trials of Jimmy Rose, a 3 x 60 drama
for ITV. Written by Alan Whiting, it
centres on Jimmy, an ex-criminal trying
to put his past behind him. Adrian
Shergold directs while Jane Dauncey
produces.
BBC Drama North is developing From
Darkness, a 4 x 60 drama from writer
Katie Baxendale. Due to shoot in the
north from early 2015, it features an
ex-policewoman who, disillusioned
with the misogyny within the force,
changes her life drastically by moving
to a remote island. But her past returns
to haunt her as four bodies from a
previous investigation are unearthed.
Hilary Martin executive produces.

In this eGuide we wanted to take a closer look at the North and North West, as a plethora of feature films and
TV dramas jostle for space in the busy region. So with the help of our online subscriber database, Production
