Black Narcissus to film UK and Nepal
A starry cast headed by Gemma Arterton and Alessandro Nivola is preparing to film Black Narcissus at Pinewood Studios and in Jomsom, Nepal.
Amanda Coe has adapted Rumer Godden’s 1939 novel about sexual repression and forbidden love, which will be delivered to BBC One and FX Productions as 3 x 6 episodes.
DNA TV and FX Productions are making the drama with Charlotte Bruus Christensen making her directorial debut.
The story is set in the 1930s and follows Sister Clodagh (Arterton) and the nuns of St Faiths, who travel to Nepal to set up a branch of their order in the remote palace of Mopu.
Diana Rigg, Jim Broadbent, Gina McKee and Rosie Cavaliero are among the cast.
Coe said of the commission: “I’m thrilled to be adapting Black Narcissus for BBC One. It’s a truly extraordinary love story, as well as a brilliantly unsettling piece of 20th century gothic about the power of a place to get under your skin and the dangers of refusing to learn from history.”
Executive producers are Andrew Macdonald, Allon Reich and Coe for DNA TV and FX Productions and Lucy Richer for the BBC. Filming starts in October.
