Emma MackeySex Education’s Emma Mackey is to play Emily Bronte in a forthcoming biopic about the Wuthering Heights author’s early years.

Due to shoot in Yorkshire early next year, the film marks the directorial feature debut of Frances O’Connor, calling the shots from her own screenplay.

Also lined up to star are Joe Alwyn, as Bronte’s lover, Fionn Whitehead as Bronte’s brother Branwell and Emily Beecham as her sister Charlotte.

The producers are Piers Tempest and Jo Bamford for Tempo Productions, David Barron and Robert Connolly and Robert Patterson of Arenamedia.

Tempest told The Knowledge: "Emily is one of those scripts that stops you in your tracks, we are really happy with how the project has come together and our casting director Fiona Weir has put together a fantastic and relevant cast. We are looking forward to getting going!"

Yorkshire is a thriving production hub, and the region’s film office, Screen Yorkshire, recently launched a support fund for local indies to help support the area’s screen sector in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic.
