London and Vancouver firm up screen links

London

Authorities in London and Vancouver have firmed up their screen sector links by signing a new memorandum of understanding at the Toronto International Film Festival.

Each city is a major international production hub and the new agreement is intended to foster greater collaboration and cross-promotional activity between them.

“While we can’t deny the sense of friendly competition we have with our friends in Vancouver, our two cities also have a long and storied history of collaboration,” said Adrian Wootton OBE, chief executive of Film London and the British Film Commission

“The global nature of our industry means major productions often work across different territories and we believe that by adopting a spirit of intelligent competition we can work collaboratively to ensure companies with a presence in both cities can benefit from our combined years of experience, knowhow and market knowledge.”

David Shepheard, director of the Vancouver Film Commission, said that the new understanding would build on a strong existing relationship with London’s screen sector.

“With so many connection points already in place, we look forward to working with our counterparts in London to explore and tackle the challenges common to two of the world’s top global production hubs while collaborating on ways to leverage and develop future opportunities.”

Nathalie Clermont of the Canada Media Fund (CMF) recently reiterated that Canada is keen to pursue more drama co-productions with UK companies.

Addressing delegates as part of a panel discussion at the Edinburgh TV Festival, Clermont acknowledged that the vast majority of Canada-UK co-productions are currently documentaries.
