Warp develops film of Jamie musical
Warp Films is working on a big-screen adaptation of the hit West End musical Everybody’s Talking About Jamie.
The show was in turn based on the BBC Three 2011 documentary Jamie: Drag Queen at 16 that followed the story of a young gay schoolboy in Sheffield who went to his school prom as his drag persona, Fifi, wearing a dress.
The theatre show won five Olivier nominations after transferring from Sheffield to the Apollo Theatre in London.
The director of the musical, Jonathan Butterell, will make his directorial feature debut on the film, working from an adapted screenplay by the original writers, Dan Gillespie Sells (frontman of rock band The Feeling) and Tom MacRae.
Warp Films’ Mark Herbert and Peter Carlton will produce the feature in association with Film4; it is due to begin filming next year.
