Chris Pine starts filming for Netflix

Chris Pine Principal photography began this week in Scotland on Outlaw King, Netflix’ take on the story of Robert The Bruce.

Chris Pine stars as the King of Scots who reigned from 1306 until his death in 1329. The warrior king led Scotland during the first War of Scottish Independence.

Aaron Taylor-Johnson reportedly plays Scottish knight and landowner James Douglas, with Alastair McKenzie also among the cast.

Filming will take place entirely in Scotland and will run until nearly the end of the year.

Historically Scotland has struggled to attract big-budget films due to the lack of a dedicated studio space, although Starz’ Outlander has done much to raise the profile of the country as a film-friendly destination, as well as to showcase its locations.

There are plans to turn the Outlander production facility – a converted industrial site in Cumbernauld now known as Wardpark Studios – into a permanent studio space.

In March this year, Scoland's first minister Nicola Sturgeon told Holyrood that planning permission had been submitted for 30,000 sq ft of additional studio resources at Wardpark.

Netflix’s production presence in the UK continues to grow, with several major TV projects currently on the go including The Innocents, The Dark Crystal: Age of Innocence and the third series of The Crown among the dramas utilising UK crew.
