New drama offerings include the historical epic, The White Queen from Company Pictures, a 10x60 series set against the iconic backdrop of the War of the Roses; thriller Mayday from writers Ben Court and Caroline Ip (Whitechapel); and The Village, from award winning writer Peter Moffat. Starring John Simm and Maxine Peake, the drama centres around the life and times of a Derbyshire village.

Other new dramas featured include Blandings, Lapland and period crime thriller Ripper Street from Tiger Aspect (episode two aired on Sunday 6 Jan). Silent Witness, Luther, Death in Paradise, Call the Midwife, Prisoners’ Wives, The Syndicate and Doctor Who also make return.

In the way of entertainment, the swivelling chairs return in The Voice; Britain is pranked in Richard Hammond’s Secret Service and Clare Balding fronts Britain’s Brightest. The latter two aired for the first time on Saturday 5 Jan.

Meet the Izzards, Paul O’Grady’s Working Class Britain and the stunning Africa are amongst the new factual programmes.
