Academy Awards: Good British Show in Craft Categories

  • Blog

The 84th Academy Awards were held on Sunday night with all their customary glitter and glamour. Unlike previous years, there were no tearful acceptance speeches of note.

The British Film Industry made a good showing. Meryl Streep took the Oscar® for Best Actress for her portrayal of the eponymous Iron Lady, the Phyllida Lloyd-directed movie about the life and times of the UK’s most controversial politician. The Iron Lady also picked up a gong for Best Make-Up.

On the craft side of things and where the UK continues to excel, Hugo took no less than five awards for Art Direction; Cinematography; Sound Editing; Sound Mixing and Visual Effects. The Shore, made on location in Northern Ireland, won Best Live Action Short Film  And Saving Face, about the charitable work of London-based, Pakistani-born plastic surgeon Dr. Mohammad Jawad, who helps Pakistani women who are the victims of acid attacks rebuild their lives with pioneering surgery, won Best Documentary Short.

Congratulations to all the winners and runners up in all categories!
