E4 Reboots Playing It Straight

C4 Entertainment Commissioning Editor David Williams has ordered a series of Playing It Straight – a dating show that first aired on C4 in 2005. The 8×60 commission from Lion Television is being filmed in Spain and will be hosted by Jameela Jamil.

Lion TV MD Jeremy Mills worked on the original and the new series. He said: “The mix of reality and comedy are perfect for the E4 audience, and there’;s tremendous fun to be had!” Phil Harris is Series Producer with Joff Powell and Simon Welton as Executive Producers. The series will air in 2012.

According to C4, all contestants enter the series believing they are taking part in a new dating show called Dream Date. They then find out they are, in fact, on Playing It Straight – a show where one single girl has to choose her perfect man from a group of 12 young bachelors. However the twist is that some of them are gay and some are straight.

What follows is eight weeks of comedy challenges and tough eliminations as the girl whittles down the potential suitors before making her final decision. If she chooses a straight man they share £50,000 prize money but if she chooses a gay man he takes the lot and she is left with nothing. Not even a date.

Explaining his decision to revive the show, Williams said: “It feels like the perfect time to bring Playing It Straight to a new E4 audience – a generation with buff boys with a liking for moisturiser, making the task faced by our lovely lady trickier than ever.”
