BBC To Employ 3D At London 2012
Roger Mosey, Director of the BBC’s London 2012 Olympics coverage, has confirmed that some of the Games will be broadcast in 3D. Speaking at the Edinburgh International Television Festival, he said the corporation hopes to do “limited experiments in 3D” following the success of 3D trials at the Wimbledon Tennis Championships this summer. There’s speculation that one of the events to be covered in 3D will be the men’s 100 metre final.
Mosey said the BBC also plans to capture some of the games with Super Hi-Vision cameras (including the 2012 Opening Ceremony). Super Hi-Vision is an ultra HD format being developed by Japanese broadcaster NHK. Although there will not be any Super Hi-Vision TV sets in UK homes by 2012, the BBC plans to show this coverage at high-profile public venues via 15m tall screens. Mosey said: "Super Hi Vision might be a better long-term prospect than 3D as it gives you the feel of being in the stadium. People are knocked out by it."
