Scottish serial-killer drama greenlit by ITV

The Dark is based on GR Halliday’s debut novel, From the Shadows

Scottish crime drama The Dark has been greenlit by ITV with filming due to begin in and around Glasgow later this year.

Matt Hartley has adapted GR Halliday’s book From the Shadows as a six-part series, produced by ITV Studios-owned Poison Pen Studios. It is the second scripted commission for ITV from the prodco, with Danny Brocklehurst’s Adultery also in active development.

Poison Pen’s Ben Stephenson, Preethi Mavahalli, Luke Woellhaf and Fern McCauley will executive produce The Dark alongside Hartley.

Matt Brown will produce with Lena Rae and Nessah Muthy on board as writers and Gilles Bannier attached as lead director and executive producer.

The drama centres on a rural Scottish community rocked by the discovery of the body of a young man, a murder eerily staged in the wilderness.  Detective Monica Kennedy becomes entangled in a cat-and-mouse game with the killer, but her judgement is clouded when her own past creeps up on her…

Stephenson said: “The Dark is a gripping hide behind the sofa thriller with unguessable twists and a central character whose mysterious past gives her an extraordinary insight into a twisted killer as well as an overpowering empathy for those left in the killer’s wake.”
