The multi-year deal is for scripted series from the multi-hyphenate.

Baby Reindeer creator Richard Gadd has signed a first-look deal with Netflix, announced by the streamer’s co-CEO Ted Sarandos.

The multi-year, scripted series first-look agreement was revealed by Sarandos at The Royal Television Society (RTS) London Convention and follows the global success of Baby Reindeer on the streaming platform: it spent eight weeks in the Global Top 10 TV (English) and reached Top 10 TV in 92 countries. At 91 days on Netflix the series had 88.4M views.

The controversial show, which Gadd also wrote, produced and starred in, also led to six Emmy wins recently. Gadd said: “I’m beyond thrilled to be continuing my creative journey with Netflix. They took a chance on me when I wasn’t proven in the television space for that I will always be grateful.

“I look forward to the years ahead with Netflix ideas with Ted, Bela, Anne, Peter and all the amazing staff who work at the company.”

Baby Reindeer is based on Gadd’s one-man stage show of the same name and explores his experience with a stalker, resulting in a lawsuit from the woman identified online as the person on whom the stalker is allegedly based.

At the RTS event, Sarandos went on to talk about the UK end of Netflix scripted content, saying: “Take Supacell, a story about five superpowered South Londoners that became a huge hit in America. Or Baby Reindeer, which hit #1 on Netflix’s Top 10 in 79 countries, and took home 6 Emmys, including Best Limited Series. Or Heartstopper, which has spoken to a whole new generation of viewers from Brazil to Japan. Or The Gentlemen, which was loved in countries from Norway to Nigeria.

“All of them became global sensations because they were all, in their own way, authentically British. Made in the UK for UK audiences by UK creators with UK casts and crews.

“The other things those shows all have in common is that they were commissioned by a UK team, based here in London and led by a remarkable Brit: Anne Mensah.

“When Anne’s team says yes to a project, it’s because they SEE something in a pitch or an idea that’s surprising or bold. They FEEL the writer or producers’ vision.”
