ITV Studios has appointed David Kermode as editor of its struggling breakfast time strand Daybreak. Currently Kermode is editor of 5 News for Sky News, a role he took up in 2007. During that time, he has boosted audience share for 5 News and increased share of the ABC1 and 16-34 audiences.

Kermode was appointed by Fiona Keenaghan, Controller of ITV Studios Daytime. She said: “With his superb journalistic record and indisputable populist touch, David is the perfect person to lead Daybreak onwards and upwards. He has impeccable editorial judgement and the ability to build strong and trusting relationships with talent. I look forward to working closely with him in the months ahead.”

Prior to joining Sky News, Kermode was editor of BBC Breakfast for BBC News from 2004 to 2007 and was responsible for a re-positioning of the show that saw it become the UK”s most popular breakfast programme. Commenting on his new role, he said: “I’;m massively excited about taking the helm at Daybreak. I know it’;s a fantastic team, there”s lots to do and I can’;t wait to get started.”

Meanwhile, at the other end of the schedule, Channel 5 continues to do well with Celebrity Big Brother. With an average audience in excess of 3 million, the channel”s primetime viewing share is up 48%. Significantly, C5”s share among young viewers is massively outperforming expectations.
