Isle of Wight film studio wins planning approval
The studio will house four sound stages and could offer marine filming opportunities due to its waterside location
Planning approval has been granted – subject to conditions – for a new film and TV studio on the Isle of Wight.
Medina Studios will be built at Kingston Marine Park in East Cowes, overlooking the River Medina .It will house four sound stages, two workshops, production offices and parking for more than 100 vehicles.
There is the possibility the studio could offer extensive marine filming opportunities due to its location, with the planned development providing an estimated 400 production jobs on the island.
A decision to sell the council-owned land to Medina Studios was approved nearly two years ago. Talent agent Duncan Heath, former Pinewood exec David Godfrey and Datasat Media’s Neil Blewett are behind the proposals for the site, in collaboration with Serious Stages. Isle of Wight-based Andrew White Planning Consultancy is handling the application.
The conditions include: the development beginning within three years of planning being granted; the submission and approval of a Construction Environmental Management Plan and a Flood Warning and Evacuation Plan.
The Isle of Wight is a growing filming hub, with a dedicated Film Office, as well as Isle of Wight Film Fixers CIC that provides props, locations, action vehicles, acting talent etc to producers filming on the island.
