First-look images of This Town, the first major drama to shoot at Digbeth Loc Studios, have been released by the BBC.Â
Â
Kudos and Nebulastar produce for the BBC in association with Kudos North, Stigma Films and Nick Angel. It was filmed on location in the Birmingham area, and at Digbeth Loc. Film and TV Studios.Â
The studios were established by multi-hyphenate Steven Knight, with business partner, TIME+SPACE CEO Piers Read. Knight is a champion for his home region of the West Midlands, and has been a driving force behind developing the creative hub of Digbeth.
The studios, converted from Victorian buildings into 80,000 sq ft of regenerated space, are due to fully open in early 2024, with Masterchef – relocating from its previous home at 3 Mills in London – among the new tenants. Â
Â
This Town is created, written and executive produced by Steven Knight. It is directed by Paul Whittington and produced by Charlotte Surtees and Tim Whitby. Executive producers are Karen Wilson, Martin Haines and Katie McAleese for Kudos, and Jo McClellan for the BBC. Laura Conway (Kudos North), Matthew James Wilkinson (Stigma Films) and Nick Angel serve as co-executive producers.Â
Â
The six-part series stars Levi Brown, Jordan Bolger, Ben Rose, Eve Austin as the four young leads. Michelle Dockery, Nicholas Pinnock, David Dawson and Geraldine James are among the co-stars.Â
Â
The drama is set during the early 1980s against a backdrop of social unrest, and explores the birth of Two Tone music that exploded out of Coventry and Birmingham. The series is co-produced with Mercury Studios, that brought in a range of musical artists to supply the music; the band in the series performs songs by producer Dan Carey and musician/novelist/poet Kae Tempest. Â
