E4 Announces My Fat Mad Teenage Diary

 

Details have been unveiled for E4”s new comedy drama series called My Fat Mad Teenage Diary (w/t).
 
Set in the mid-90s at the height of cool Britannia, My Fat Mad Teenage Diary will air this autumn. It looks at teen life from the perspective of sixteen-year-old Rae – “a fat, funny girl who, despite an eccentric mother and her own mental health issues, has a huge lust for life, love and trying to get laid”. 
 
The lead role will be played by Sharon Rooney; her first major TV role after an early career of comedy theatre and stand-up. She is joined by a raft of young talent. Best friend Chloe played by Jodie Comer, jack-the-lad and joker Chop is played by Jordan Murphy. Other cast members include Ciara Baxendale, Dan Cohen and Nico Mirallegro. Claire Rushbrook (Whitechapel, Mutual Friends) plays Rae’;s mother.
 
Sophie Gardiner, Channel 4 Drama Commissioning Editor, said: “We are delighted Sharon Rooney is our Rae. She embodies everything we love about this show – warm, funny & truthful.”
 
The series is adapted from Rae Earl’;s real-life diary and book of the same name and the series is written by Tom Bidwell (Oscar-nominee for his short film Wish 143). It is directed by Tim Kirkby and Ben Caron, and is a Tiger Aspect production.
