Downton Abbey series 5 ready to wrap filming
A fabulous country estate, an abundance of beautiful interiors, costumes and cars, and a plethora of secrets and lies both above and below stairs can mean only one thing: the fifth series of Downton Abbey is on its way.
With just a few more days of filming left (shooting ends on 17 August) the period drama has been in production at its usual home of Ealing Studios since mid-February. From Carnival Film & TV, the Golden Globe and Primetime Emmy award-winning show has proved a monster hit for ITV, having become one of the most widely-watched television dramas in the world by series 3 and selling in around 220 territories.
With series four notching up an average of 11.8m viewers in the UK, the public’s appetite shows little sign of diminishing. Downton has attracted some heavyweight talent too, with Shirley MacLaine and Paul Giamatti as recent series regulars. Richard E. Grant and Anna Chancellor are among those putting in an appearance in the latest run.
The locations play a vital role in the appeal of the show, with Berkshire’s Highclere Castle portraying the fictional Yorkshire stately home in both exterior and interior shots. Many of the outdoor village scenes are filmed in Bampton, Oxfordshire.
