The second series of Death Valley began filming yesterday (26 August) in Wales, starring Timothy Spall and Gwyneth Keyworth.

The BBC One cosy-crime drama is made in-house at BBC Studios Comedy and is written and created by Paul Doolan. Additional funding support has been provided by the Welsh Government via Creative Wales.

In the odd-couple series, Spall plays retired actor John Chapel and Keyworth is DS Janie Mallowan, as they team up on sleuthing duties in the small Welsh village. Alexandria Riley, Steffan Rhodri, Melanie Walters and Rithvik Andugula co-star.

Spall said: “I’m delighted that the show has been received so well, and audiences have embraced the warm and eccentric nature of John and Janie’s partnership. I’m really looking forward to revisiting this unlikely duo with the brilliant Gwyneth Keyworth as they take on more crime solving escapades in Wales.”

Nick Andrews, head of commissioning for BBC Cymru Wales, added: “Death Valley has such a distinctive look, tone and feel about it – all of which audiences have completely fallen in love with. The numbers in Wales have been huge! It’s lovely to see our neck of the woods providing both the bucolic backdrop and a cast of amazing characters who have the UK sitting on the edge of their seats week in week out. Amazing work from the very brightest and best.”

Death Valley (6 x 45’) is a BBC Studios Comedy in association with BritBox for BBC One. Written and created by Doolan, with additional material by Sian Harries, Series Two is directed by Simon Hynd and Claire Winyard; the producer is Nikki Wilson.

The executive producers are Madeline Addy, Cole, Doolan and Spall; the series was ordered by Jon Petrie, director of comedy and Nick Andrews, head of commissioning BBC Wales. Commissioning editors are Seb Barwell for BBC Comedy, and Paul Forde for BBC Wales.
