Daniel Day-Lewis’ new film, Anemone, was shot at Aria Film Studios on Anglesey, north Wales.

The feature marks the actor’s return to the screen after an eight-year hiatus; the film is directed by his son, Ronan Day-Lewis, from a screenplay co-written by the pair.

Aria Film Studios officially opened its doors in January 2023. The facility was established by Rondo Media and S4C’s commercial arm S4C Digital Media Limited, with the support of the Welsh Government through Creative Wales.

It comprises 20,000 sq ft in total, with two fully soundproofed stages of 9,500 sq ft and 6,500 sq ft, and is described by Welsh Government culture minister Jack Sargeant as “a vital regional hub for skills and talent development” and “an important economic driver in North Wales since 2023.”

Anemone occupied the larger sound stage at Aria, filming there during the summer and autumn of 2024 and used the site as the production base while also filming exterior shots at nearby locations including the remote cottage, beaches and woodlands.

The film marks the younger Day-Lewis’ directorial debut, and co-stars Samantha Morton. The Focus Features/Plan B production is distributed globally by Universal Pictures International.

Iddon Jones, studio executive at Aria Studios, said: “It was a pleasure to host this film. Our studio demonstrated its ability to meet the requirements of premium films, whilst providing the space for the production team to fully deliver on their creative vision.”

Co-producer Jeremy Campbell said: “Filming Anemone at ARIA Film Studios was an exceptional experience from start to finish. The studio’s world-class sound stages and facilities provided everything we needed to realise the film’s creative vision with precision and care.

“The ARIA team went above and beyond to support every aspect of production — their professionalism, flexibility, and attention to detail ensured a seamless and successful shoot.

“ARIA offered the perfect combination of technical excellence along with access to the breathtaking landscapes of North Wales, which became an integral part of the film’s atmosphere and emotional depth. It’s a world-class facility for filmmaking and I couldn’t recommend it more highly.”

Aria Film Studios has previously hosted productions including Rondo Media dramas Rownd a Rownd and Bariau, both for S4C.
