Media Production Show 2018 – a drama preview

MPS logo The Media Production Show (MPS) returns to London Olympia next month with the two-day event held on 12 and 13 June.

Hosted by Media Business Insight, the show will see key exhibitors presenting products and services that are essential to all stages of content production.

There will also be a wide range of seminars and panel sessions with industry experts offering insight, debate, comment and expertise.

Scripted content makes a strong showing at MPS, starting with a morning session on Day One called Creating the New Generation of Drama Series, followed by a Screenwriters Masterclass with prolific TV writers Anna Symon and Danny Brocklehurst.

Still on Day One, the afternoon sessions include Drama Indies: State of the Nation, where Susan Hogg of Studio Lambert and World Productions’ Simon Heath will debate how much the current boom for UK drama is actually benefitting producers.

Late that day is UK Drama: Commissioning Landscape. Here some of the industry’s big-hitters will give an insight into the kind of content they are looking for and provide advice on commissioning approaches. The panel comprises Polly Hill, head of drama at ITV; Sara Johnson, vice president, scripted for Fox; Channel 4’s head of drama, Beth Willis and Pete Thornton, senior commissioning editor at UKTV.

Walter Presents

Five years ago, Walter Iuzzolino secured the funding and backing from Channel 4 for Walter Presents, a VoD service on the All4 online platform that specialises in foreign language drama and comedy. He will be talking to Nick Goundry of The Knowledge during a seminar at 15.30 on Day One.

Day Two of MPS, 13 June, sees an afternoon seminar called UK Film Indies: What’s the Landscape? Discussing the new opportunities for independent filmmakers will be TV presenter Alex Zane, MD of Bankside Films and Head Gear Films, Phil Hunt, and producer Uzma Hasan of Little House Productions.

Peaky Blinders

One of the most high-profile British dramas of recent years, Peaky Blinders, is under the microscope later on Day Two when The Knowledge’s Goundry chairs By Order of the Peaky Blinders.

The case study will examine Steven Knight’s BBC Two hit with the help of some of the creative team from Series 4. On the panel will be director David Caffrey, DoP Cathal Watters, producer Frith Tiplady and Jamie Glazebrook, CEO of Caryn Mandabach Productions.
