Your guide to Filming on Location in the UK - page 8-9

Still with Hollywood, and Guy Ritchie’s
latest project, Knights of the Round
Table: King Arthur, has a month or so
left of its four month shoot. Warner
Bros.’ re-imagining of the Camelot
legend stars Charlie Hunnam, and
has been making use of the stunning
mountain backdrops of Snowdonia.
Another US film demonstrating the
advantages of filming in Wales is The
Huntsman, sequel to Snow White
and The Huntsman which shot in
Pembrokeshire a few years ago. The
follow-up, which is still in production,
also stars Chris Hemsworth and
Charlize Theron, joined by Jessica
Chastain. Locations include the Elan
Valley, Powys, where 2nd unit stunt
work is being done.
The slate is long
The craggy and dramatic Dinorwic
slate quarry, near Llanberis in
north Wales, provided a timeless
backdrop for the producers of Tarzan
Untamed, Warner Bros.’ star-studded
interpretation of the Edgar Rice
Burroughs story with Alexander
Skarsgård, Samuel L. Jackson,
Margot Robbie, Djimon Hounsou and
Christoph Waltz.
Currently nearing the end of its shoot
is Me Before You, starring Sam Claflin
and Game of Thrones’ Emilia Clarke.
Adapted from Jojo Moyes’ novel, the
film has shot some key sequences
in Pembroke recently, as has the big
screen version of Bad Education from
Tiger Aspect Productions.
It’s been a busy year
Other productions to have been
filmed in Wales over the last year
or so include Under Milk Wood,
Kevin Allen’s new interpretation
of Dylan Thomas’ classic ‘play for
voices’, starring Rhys Ifans and
Charlotte Church and filmed in
Solva, Pembrokeshire last summer.
The feature debuts at the Edinburgh
International Film Festival later this
month.
Road movie-with-a-twist Petroleum
Spirit was filmed around Swansea and
Cardiff last year, while Jim Gillespie’s
Take Down used Anglesey as well as
south Wales last summer.
TV production is rising
In terms of TV, Wales continues to
prove a draw for producers: filming
on the second series of Hinterland,
the detective drama described as
‘Welsh noir’, wrapped early June. The
series, which is filmed in both English
and Welsh, mainly shot in Ceredigion
locations including Aberystwyth.
The BBC’s feature length adaptation
of Lady Chatterley’s Lover spent a
month in Wales filming last year, using
locations such as Rhondda Heritage
Park, Rhondda Cynon Taff. Holliday
Grainger, Richard Madden and James
Norton star.
With shows such as Da Vinci’s
Demons and Wizards Vs Aliens
having based three series each to
date in Wales - all upping the profile of
location filming in Wales - the impetus
shows no signs of slowing down.
The healthy history and a burgeoning
line up of projects using new or
revitalised studio spaces and stunning
locations, make it seem almost a
certainty that the film and TV industry
in Wales is set for a very rosy future.
