Filming in London and the South East - page 16-17

When you are looking for studios,
there are a few things to keep in
mind. Here’s a few tips to help
make your production go smoothly.
Get the full breakdown
Make sure you have a detailed
rundown of your production
schedule. This way you and the
studio can work out what the total
would be of the location hire price
and which potential extras you might
need to budget for.
All UK studios should have company
information, banking and insurance
details available at all times. Get this
information when you can as you
always want to be prepared in case
another type of drama strikes.
Be contactable
If you’re to shoot at different locations
around the world then make
sure you keep a track of the time
difference. Make sure you can be
contacted during your UK working
hours so that if anything happens
with the studio booking - something
to the set for example - you are able
to improvise, adapt and overcome.
Despite crazy shooting schedules
and jetlags, ensure there’s a port of
call you can rely on. And actually,
that’s no different if you’re shooting
at various locations in the UK.
Payment
Check the terms of the payment. If
your company is registered overseas
you may be entitled to to an exclusion
of the 20% VAT.
A deposit is almost always required
to reserve the space and this may
be refundable depending on the
situation and the studio. A booking
in London is usually confirmed
with a 50% deposit payment prior
to shooting. Studios may have a
cancellation fee within their contract
terms but are normally somewhat
forgiving as long as there is an
appropriate cause and notice period.
Insurance
Studios need to have a
comprehensive insurance, offering
public liability insurance which covers
any accidents. However, if you are
travelling from another country then
you must acquire insurance before
setting off. All legal documents must
have company names and addresses
for the insurances to be valid. There
are several insurance deals that can
cover your kit hire, location hire and
any medical emergencies. Check
that all aspects of your shoot will be
covered by either your or the studio’s
insurance.
Health & Safety and legal
requirements
All studios need to have good health,
safety and fire precautions in place.
Make sure you know who is first aid
trained on site. There have been
several instances on action film sets
where this has proved vital. General
information for health and safety in
film and TV productions can be found
