area include Rochdale Town Hall, Lyme
Park and Stockport Town Hall, which
doubled as Chester Council offices.
Scenes were also shot at the caves in
Frodsham, at the church on the Arley
Estate, Great Budworth in Cheshire,
the Swan Inn in Garston and The Swan
with Two Necks in Stockport. Filming
locations in and around Liverpool were
also used including the Cunard building
on Water Street and St George’s Hall.
Street scenes were shot in Bolton and
in Ancoats where, using special effects,
the production transformed Redhill
Street into a 1929 Liverpool dockside.
Marketing Cheshire said: “We have
worked closely with Creative England
on this and other projects to profile
Cheshire and Warrington’s wonderful
locations to producers. We are delighted
that Great Budworth and Walton Hall in
Warrington were included.”
Yorkshire
Hull
Kingston Upon Hull in East Yorkshire
has a diverse architectural heritage. The
city centre and old town boast period
locations ranging from grand Victorian
and Edwardian civic buildings to hidden
Georgian backstreets and alleyways.
Hull also enjoys a unique position on
the banks of the rivers Hull and Humber.
As one of the oldest ports in England,
the city’s waterside heritage is plentiful
including smart marinas, old Victorian
docks and warehouses. Earlier this
year Hull was chosen as one of the key
backdrops for Ecosse Films’ Girls’ Night
Out – which shot in locations including
Alfred Gelder Street, Land Of Green
Ginger, The George pub and Hull City
Hall. The city’s period locations acted
as a double for 1940s central London.
“As Girls’ Night Out is set during the VE
celebrations of 1945, the film needed
locations which could replicate central
London at that time,” explains location
manager Tom Howard. “Hull had the
diversity of streets the film needed from
a grand thoroughfare for Piccadilly and
tight Victorian alleys for Soho. I had
never visited the city before so I was
surprised by the diversity.”
North York Moors & Yorkshire
Dales National Parks
The North York Moors National Park
is famed for its heather moorland.
From the relatively flat moor tops, the
360 degree panorama is breathtaking.
Framing the eastern edge of the National
Park is the North Yorkshire heritage
coast with its wide sandy beaches, tiny
fishing villages and secluded coves.
Lush green dales, extensive woodland,
sandstone villages, ruined abbeys and
ancient churches make the moors ideal
for film and television productions.
Recent productions include: Harry
Potter And The Philosopher’s Stone/
Chamber Of Secrets, The Secret
Diaries of Miss Anne Lister, Wild Child,
Heartbeat and The Royal. The Yorkshire
Dales National Park also has some of
the most breathtaking scenery in the
UK, making it an ideal location for TV
and film production. Numerous titles
including a 2008 version of Wuthering
Heights filmed here.
Leeds
The Victoria Quarter in Leeds is a series
of Victorian shopping arcades, designed
in 1900 by Frank Matcham, the architect
of classic Victorian theatres such as the
London Coliseum and Palladium. The
Victoria Quarter can be seen in Married
Single Other and has also featured
in Spooks: Code 9, The Innocent,
Diamond Geezer and The Travel Show.
Half hour outside Leeds City Centre is
17th century country house Bramham
Park, which has been used for both
period and contemporary productions
including The Secret Diaries Of Miss
Anne Lister, Wuthering Heights,
Diamond Geezer, Lost In Austen,
Micawber and The Chase. Another
popular location in Leeds is Harewood
House, featured in Death Comes To
Pemberley and Get Santa.
East Yorkshire Coast &
The Humber
The East Yorkshire coast and Humber
Estuary offer a variety of stunning and
unique locations, stretching along 80
miles of coastline. From the sheer white
stones at RSPB-run Bempton Cliffs to
coastal towns such as Bridlington, the
options are varied. Not to be overlooked
is the Humber Bridge, still ranked the
5th longest in the world. Productions to
have filmed around here include South
Riding, 1066, This Is England, A Touch
Of Frost and Atonement, which filmed
partly at Grimsby Docks and Redcar.
Sheffield
Known as The Steel City, Sheffield is
actually the greenest city in the UK,
with four trees to every person that
lives there. The city has seen major
regeneration over the last decade and
boasts a broad range of architectural
styles. Built on seven hills, the city
offers breathtaking scenery as well as a
friendly, cosmopolitan city centre - and
not to mention a fantastic international
documentary festival. Sheffield has
a rich cultural heritage and is home
to experienced crew members and
production companies. Productions
to have been located in Sheffield
include This is England ‘86, Four Lions,
Wuthering Heights, Hush and Summer.
