Filming in Yorkshire and the North West - page 6-7

The North West
Manchester
Northern Quarter to double for 1940s
New York. And that’s not the only
project to have been based in this part
of the city. It was also transformed into
Victorian London for Sherlock Holmes:
A Game of Shadows and 1980s Soho
for the BBC’s Worried About The
Boy. Manchester of course is much
more than a transient location. With
studio complex MediaCityUK firmly
established on Salford Quays, it’s also a
production hub that has played host to
dozens of dramas in recent years.
The Lake District
The beauty of the Lake District has been
widely recognised since the times of
William Wordsworth. More recently the
film industry has taken advantage of its
breathtaking scenery. Kristen Stewart,
Chris Hemsworth and Charlize Theron
were all in the area to shoot Snow White
And The Huntsman, utilising National
Trust locations around Little Langdale,
such as Cathedral Quarry and Blea
Tarn. Previously the area was use in
the evocative 2006 movie Miss Potter,
starring Renee Zellweger as children’s
author Beatrix Potter. Other films to have
shot here include Withnail and I, 28 Days
Later and Pandaemonium.
Liverpool
Liverpool (alongside, as we mentioned
before, Manchester) played host to
the blockbuster feature film Captain
America: The First Avenger and has
subsequently seen production soar.
Projects to have spent some time here
include Fast and Furious 6, Peaky
Blinders, Tubby and Enid, Utopia, Cilla,
Foyle’s War and Jack Ryan. Testament
to Liverpool’s popularity is that the Jack
Ryan sequel Shadow Recruit returned
to the city – as did Peaky Blinders. In
the case of Jack Ryan, the city was
used to double for New York and
Moscow. Another major production to
visit Liverpool in 2014 was ITV drama
Foyle’s War, which started filming in
January, using the city predominantly
to stand in for London. Producer John
Chapman praised the warm reception
which the cast and crew had received in
Liverpool, adding: “To find somewhere
like Liverpool, which has such a range
of Victorian, Edwardian and Georgian
houses and buildings, is just amazing.”
North Derbyshire/Peak District
The Peak District is not as well known
as the Lake District and Yorkshire
Moors but it is a superb location all
the same. Recently it played home to
BBC1’s hit drama series The Village. The
series filmed extensively across North
Derbyshire’s Peak District, with support
from Creative England, which assisted
with filming on location and helped find
the local crew and facilities needed to
complete the series. Locations used
include Hayfield, Glossop and The Hope
Valley in Edale, while temporary studio
facilities and production offices were
set up in New Mills. The production
also used the National Trust’s Lyme
Park near Disley in Cheshire, which was
previously used in a 1990s adaptation of
Pride and Prejudice.
Cheshire
The BBC’s new drama Our Zoo tells the
story of the founding of Chester Zoo in
the 1930s. The good news is that the
BBC has used locations in the region.
Key locations include Walton Hall in
Warrington, used as the exterior of a
stately home. Other filming spots in the

The UK is bursting at the borders with amazing film and TV locations. So it’s impossible to cover their
richness and range in a single story. But here we pick out a few interesting options and identify some
of the recent productions they have been seen in.
