Your guide to filming on location - page 14-15

By LocationManagers,
For LocationManagerS
Location One have been at the
front line of Plant & Equipment
hire, and Consumable sales, for
Film, Television and Commercial
productions for 6 years. Operating
up until 2012 in London and the
South we have now added a
Manchester branch which offers
our customers truly nationwide
coverage.
Our new branch is based in the
industrial heartland of the North
and is run by James Alexander, Ex-
Location Manager. Manchester is
not only a vibrant city, but the ideal
central point to cater for the North
West and beyond. Surrounded
by stunning countryside, it’s a
logical migrate for production
companies searching for a base
outside of London. Derbyshire,
The North Yorkshire Moors, The
Dales, North Wales are all within
an easy commute, and there is a
huge abundance of derelict and
empty property which is perfect for
filming. Most will be familiar with our
London Branch, but for those that
aren’t give us a call or pop in for a
cup of tea anytime. Barking is not
as bad as you may think!?
Over the years we have had our
fair share of weird and wonderful
questions and requests regarding
location shooting. Some crop up
time and time again, so here they
are (hopefully with some useful
answers):
FAQ.
Can I put white diesel in a
generator or does it have to be
red diesel / what is red diesel!?
The government taxes ‘red diesel’ at a fraction of the
cost of ‘white’ diesel – i.e the diesel you fill up your car
with. Any non-road going vehicle / agricultural vehicle /
generator can use red diesel, this scheme is designed to
alleviate the tax burden on those industries that need to
use large amounts of diesel. The ‘red’ is merely a pigment
that is added to the fuel so that fuel can be visually
checked at the roadside under inspection. There is no
problem with filling a generator with white diesel – it’s just
expensive!
FAQ.
Do I need a waste bowser to
collect my kitchen / costume
truck waste?
The only place you can legally dispose of ‘grey’ water
waste (i.e kitchen / costume truck water) is down a
mains sewer drain. It is not acceptable in the eyes of the
Environment Agency to allow this water to run into a ‘storm
drain’. Storm drain water runs back into the water table and
therefore any contaminants will pollute the springs / rivers
they run into. So if your catering unit or costume truck does
not have a holding tank or if the holding tank is overflowing
you should either find a mains drain or get a waste water
bowser.
FAQ.
Can I dry hire Location One bowsers and ‘plant’ and tow the units
around myself?
In theory yes, if you passed your test BEFORE 1st Jan 1997 you have what’s known as ‘grandfather’ rights and you can tow
any trailer up to 3.5 tonnes – assuming the vehicle you are driving is permissible to tow the weight of trailer. A bowser has a
GVW (gross vehicle weight) of 1.5 tonnes. To clarify, it does not matter if the bowser is empty and only weighing half a tonne,
the regulations stipulate that the maximum possible weight of the trailer is the weight taken into account. As a guide most 4 x
4 vehicles will happily tow up to 2.5 tonnes. However watch out on the vans, not all have great towing capacities. MAKE SURE
YOU CHECK THE TOWING CAPACITY OF YOUR TOW VEHICLE.
If you passed your test AFTER 1st Jan 1997 you are permitted to tow a trailer up to 750kg OR any trailer providing the
combined weight of the vehicle and trailer does not exceed 3.5 tonnes. I.e if your vehicle had a Maximum Authorised Mass of
2 tonnes and you want to tow a bowser with a GVW of 1.5 tonne you are OK. BUT if the MAM of your vehicle is 2.5 tonne the
bowser would put you over limit by half a tonne and you would NOT be allowed to tow this. If you want to tow more than 750Kg
or over the 3.5 tonne limit you need to take a trailer test to add category B+E to your license.
Towing equipment without the correct license will nullify insurance and will attract points / fines if pulled over at the roadside.
BY THE WAY OUR ECO LIGHTS ARE THE ONLY TOWER LIGHTS ON THE MARKET WITH A GVW OF 750KG – so anyone can
tow these.
