Summer filming in the UK

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them Spending on feature film production hit a record high during the first three months of 2017 and the purple patch looks set to continue as multiple projects gear up for shooting later this year. 

With the help of our online subscription service Production Intelligence (PI), we take a look at some of the films that will be beginning production this summer.

Three Seconds 
Clive Owen A New York-set thriller, Three Seconds, is heading to film in the UK. Clive Owen and Rosamund Pike star in the film which is based on the best-selling Swedish novel by Borge Hellstrom and Anders Roslund about a former Special Ops soldier who must infiltrate a Polish drugs gang.

Italian actor/director Andrea Di Stefano will be calling the shots from a screenplay by Matt Cook. Basil Iwanyk produces for his company Thunder Road Pictures and is joined by Ollie Madden and Vishal Rungta. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them 2
The second in a planned run of five Harry Potter spin-off films begins production in the summer. Eddie Redmayne reprises his role of Newt Scamander in the as-yet-untitled follow-up to last year’s Oscar-winning original which took over $800m worldwide.

PI has details of the UPM, location manager and casting director along with the UK executive producer. 

 

Aladdin
Guy Ritchie is at the helm of Disney’s live-action reboot of the story Aladdin and the Magic Lamp from classic folk tale book One Thousand and One Nights. Principal photography is due to begin in mid-summer and run for around seven months.

In February we confirmed the name of the UPM on PI and have since added other key hires including the production designer, casting director, location manager and production co-ordinator along with the studio. 


 

Saoirse Ronan Mary Queen of Scots
Working Title’s historical epic, Mary Queen of Scots, is set to star Saoirse Ronan as the doomed monarch with recent press reports suggesting Margot Robbie was lining up to play Elizabeth I. Theatre director Josie Rourke is at the helm.

Specifics on PI include the studio, co-producer, location manager, casting director and production manager. 




Johnny English 3
Due to start a little later in the summer is another Working Title film, Johnny English 3. Little is known about the project plot-wise but Rowan Atkinson will reprise his role of the hapless spy. 

PI first listed the project back in February and we have since updated with shoot dates and key production personnel including the director, line producer, UPM, production co-ordinator and location manager.  

 

The Little Stranger 
After his success with Room, which included an Oscar for Brie Larson, director Lenny Abrahamson is gearing up for a July start on The Little Stranger. Lucinda Coxon has adapted Sarah Waters’ ghostly 1940s-set gothic novel with Domhnall Gleeson and Ruth Wilson set to star.  

Potboiler Production and Element Pictures are making the film with cameras due to roll in July. PI subscribers can find the shoot dates and key hires including the UPM and casting director


 

Slaughterhouse Rulez 
Simon Pegg Simon Pegg and Nick Frost are executive producing Slaughterhouse Rulez, a comedy horror set in an exclusive boarding school. When a controversial fracking project in woodland near the school releases an unearthly horror with the pupils and staff battling to survive.  

Crispian Mills directs from a screenplay he wrote with Henry Fitzherbert. Catalyst Global Media is working with Pegg and Frost‘s newly-founded shingle, Stolen Picture, on the film; PI has details of the producer and casting director with more to follow shortly. 


 

Sweetness in the Belly 
Parallel Film Productions in Ireland and Siena Films in Canada are collaborating on Sweetness in the Belly, which is due to begin filming in London in September. The feature is based on the book by Camilla Gibb and centres on a young woman – to be played in the film by Saoirse Ronan - who is orphaned at a young age in Ethiopia and ends up a refugee years later in London having fled civil war. 

Ethiopian director Zeresenay Mehari is at the helm; the project marks his second feature as director. His first, Difret, was executive produced by Angelina Jolie and won several major awards including the World Cinematic Dramatic Audience Award at Sundance in 2014.  



The Universe Versus Alex Woods
Monumental Pictures is developing The Universe Versus Alex Woods, a big-screen adaptation of Gavin Extence’s novel about a teenage science geek who is hit by a meteorite. Developed with BBC Films, news of the film was first reported on Screen. Peter Cattaneo directs from Ol Parker’s screenplay. 

The three producers are listed on Production Intelligence; more names and specific dates will follow over the coming months. 

 

The Pre-Nup 
The Pre-Nup comes from producer Jeanna Polley and director Jonathan Lynn and centres on an American investment banker whose father pressurises him into a pre-nuptial agreement on the eve of his wedding. Emile Hirsch and Vanessa Hudgens are among the cast. 

Polley’s production company The Producers is also developing The Angel Makers, a First World War-set feature currently eyeing an end-off-year shoot.
