Benedict Cumberbatch film heads to Brighton

Benedict Cumberbatch”s latest feature film, The Current War, has set up for location work in Brighton as part of its UK-based shoot.

The grounds of the city”s Royal Pavilion have been chosen as the location in which to recreate the 1893 Chicago World Fair, according to Brighton and Hove News, with the venue being closed to the public for four days in total.

The film”s executive producer Ann Ruark said in comments reported by the news outlet: “This week production on upcoming film The Current War has come to Brighton. The Royal Pavilion has given us the ideal setting to recreate the 1893 Chicago World Fair, where Thomas Edison and George Westinghouse battled for who would provide electricity across the land.

“We are truly grateful to Brighton and Hove City Council for being so accommodating and welcoming us to the city.”

The Current War was first listed on Production Intelligence in early November, and updated with key hires and shoot dates over the subsequent weeks. The period drama also stars Michael Shannon, Nicholas Hoult, Tom Holland, Tuppence Middleton and Katherine Waterston.

There are several areas of Brighton that require separate permissions for filming, including Brighton Pier, West Pier area, The Royal Pavilion and Brighton Marina. Brighton is a member of Creative England”s ‘Film Friendly Partnership”.

Ben Wheatley filmed his Boston-set 1970s crime drama Free Fire in Brighton in the summer of 2015, and in 2014 local resident and musician Nick Cave shot the feature-length documentary 20,000 Days on Earth entirely in the East Sussex city.
