Top film picks of 2017

It”s been a busy year for film and TV with some great reviews for feature releases and TV dramas or comedies made by UK crew.

We canvassed the opinions of a select group from within our team of stalwarts on The Knowledge to find out their favourite films and TV dramas of the year.

We start with film, and Paddington 2 got the votes of senior account manager Alex Curry, who said of the feature: “My favourite film this year has to be Paddington 2 – it was absolutely brilliant.

“It was funny and moving and you are never too old to fall in love with a bear!”

Drama editor Nia Daniels concurred, adding: “Hugh Grant was clearly relishing every moment of his brilliant performance and the prison scenes were superb. With nods to famous films and a rollicking screenplay, it was genuinely exciting and affecting.”

Paddington 2 was filmed on location in London, Hertfordshire and at HM Prison Shepton Mallet in Somerset, as well as at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden.

For journalist Nick Goundry, one of his top films of the year “had to be” God”s Own Country. He explained: “Francis Lee”s debut feature tells the touching tale of a burgeoning romance between a farmer”s son and a Romanian migrant worker who arrives to help with lambing season.

“The tightly scripted human drama is framed against Yorkshire”s bleakly beautiful landscapes.”

The film stars Josh O”Connor and Alec Secareanu, both of whom were sent by director Lee – who himself grew up on a farm – to work in the countryside as part of the preparation for their roles.

The feature was shot in Yorkshire and went on to receive glowing critical acclaim.

Here’s to another fruitful year for UK crew in 2018!
