Krypton TV drama to film in Belfast
A TV drama set on Superman’s home planet of Krypton will be the first production to film at Belfast Harbour Studios.
The new drama from production companies Phantom Four and Warner Horizon Scripted Television is set decades before the destruction of alien planet Krypton – as depicted in the Superman film franchise – and follows Superman’s grandfather in a story of political feuds and family honour.
Belfast Harbour Studios is Northern Ireland’s newest production facility and offers a pair of sound stages each spanning 32,670 sq ft, which can be opened up to create a single filming space.
“We are delighted to welcome Warner Horizon to Northern Ireland,” said Richard Williams, CEO of Northern Ireland Screen.
“Securing Krypton is a real coup for us and cements our position as a world-class filming location with a local and highly-skilled crew base with vast experience. The construction of the new studios by Belfast Harbour has added tremendous value to our overall proposition.”
Fantasy drama Game of Thrones is the highest-profile production to film in Northern Ireland and uses the city’s Titanic Studios as a base.
Productions shooting in Belfast qualify for the UK’s generous filming incentive support.
Northern Ireland is a particularly popular filming location for UK television dramas. The BBC recently pledged to spend an additional £11m on TV commissioning in the region over the next three years and renewed a partnership deal with Northern Ireland Screen.
