Gunpowder filming at Beverley Minster
New BBC One drama series Gunpowder will film on location at Beverley Minster in East Yorkshire this week, as will the second series of ITV’s period drama Victoria.
Gunpowder is produced by Kudos and will tell the story of the infamous Gunpowder Plot in 1605.
A team of conspirators led by Robert Catesby – and including Guy Fawkes – responded to Protestant oppression of Catholicism in England by planning to blow up the Houses of Parliament to kill King James I.
The three-part drama features Game of Thrones star Kit Harington (pictured) – whose production company Thriker Films is also involved – and is written by Ronan Bennett.
“The Gunpowder Plot is one of the best-known stories in Britain and most people are aware of the basic facts,” said Diederick Santer, chief executive officer of Kudos.
“But what Ronan has achieved with his page-turning script, and what I hope Kit and Peter and the rest of the magnificent cast will do, is to take the BBC One audience behind the story, into the people, the passion and the politics.”
Beverley Minster was built between 1190 and 1420, around the tomb of John, Bishop of York, who originally founded a monastery on the site in the 6th century.
The building will also host filming this week for the second series of Victoria, Mammoth Screen’s drama for ITV telling the story of the early years of Queen Victoria’s reign in the mid-19th century. Beverley Minster also doubled for Westminster Abbey and St James’ Palace during the filming of the show’s first series.
